Established in 1989 in Calder’s studio and home at Saché in the Indre-et-Loire Valley, Atelier Calder is the oldest residency program of its kind in France. International artists are invited to live and work on the property for three months, receiving a living stipend as well as technical and financial support to realize artistic projects that might otherwise prove daunting. Designed by Calder and built in 1962, the studio embodies a simple and functional aesthetic, blending seamlessly into the surrounding natural environment.
Since its inception, Atelier Calder has hosted over fifty international artists for periods of at least three months and up to one year. A Board of Directors, led by Laurent Le Bon, President of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, oversees the residency program and the artist selection process. The Board is comprised of Calder Foundation representatives, art historians, curators, and members of Drac Centre-Val de Loire, Région Centre-Val de Loire, and Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap). Atelier Calder receives financial support from Drac Centre-Val de Loire, Région Centre-Val de Loire, and the Calder Foundation.
